In development for over four years, Comet Technology’s proprietary codec compresses video into a format optimized for low-bandwidth, live streaming. Comet’s codec is the first and only technology to allow reliable video to be transmitted to and from commonly available cellular devices. Live upstream video is now possible over 2.5G and greater cellular networks. Utilizing limited bandwidth, Comet technology allows continuous video and audio uplinks without dropping the connection regardless of fall-offs in available bandwidth or weaknesses in the cellular network’s coverage.
While MPEG4 was a breakthrough in video compression over broadband networks, it was never designed to be used in a cellular environment. The very nature of mobile wireless precludes a constant bandwidth connection. The ever changing quality of a cellular connection forces MPEG4 data packets to fill the buffer causing frozen frames, pixelization, and, eventually the inevitable dropped connection. Often the viewer is left with a frozen screen, unable to determine whether there the connection is active. As the above chart shows, the Comet Video codec allows for significantly higher frame rates at far lower bandwidths than MPEG. Comet key frames are also 80% smaller than MPEG key frames while the delta frames are 33% the size of MPEG delta frames. Real-time and un-buffered, reliable video streaming from a cellular device is a reality today.
